An accessible 3,200-meter alpine trek sitting just 5 km above Triund, offering up-close snowline views of the Dhauladhar range and peaceful, crowd-free glacial camping.
02 Nights – 03 Days · Best for travel magazines, personal stories or feature articles.
Drive: 22 km (~1 hour) along the scenic Rohtang Pass highway to Gulaba
Trek Distance: ~9 km.
Time Required: 4 - 5 hours
Altitude Gain: 2,875 m
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (Steady incline with a steep final stretch)
The Trail & Experience: Morning (09:00 AM): Set out directly from your Dharamkot stay. The trail begins with a gradual, lovely walk through beautiful forests of oak, deodar, and rhododendron. You will hike past the Galu Devi Temple, which acts as the official checkpoint for the trek.
Past Galu Devi, the trail opens up to reveal sweeping views of the Kangra Valley on one side. The path is well-defined and rocky. You'll pass a few iconic local tea stalls along the way—like the Magic View Cafe—perfect spots to take a short breather, grab a bottle of water, and enjoy a quick snack.
The last 1 to 1.5 km of the trek features a series of sharp, steep switchbacks (often called the "22 curves"). Dig into your steady rhythm here. As you clear the final curve, the terrain flattens out dramatically onto the sprawling, grassy ridge of Triund.
Check into your campsite. The stark contrast here is incredible—the massive, snow-clad wall of the Dhauladhar Range feels close enough to touch on your left, while the vast Kangra Valley stretches out endlessly to your right. Watch a spectacular sunset paint the granite mountains in deep shades of gold and pink.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~4 km
Time Required: 3 hours
Altitude Gain: 3,200 m
Difficulty: Moderate; rocky glacial moraines and steep ridges
The Trail & Experience: Wake up early to witness a golden sunrise over the peaks. After a warm breakfast, you leave your main rucksacks at camp and head out with just a light daypack. The trail immediately climbs steeply for about 2 km up a rocky ridge to reach Khabrotu / Snowline Cafe, a legendary pitstop that marks the traditional snow line.
From Snowline, the trail transitions dramatically from alpine grass to rugged mountain terrain, crossing loose glacial moraines, scree, and boulders. You descend slightly into the flat glacial basin of Laka Got before reaching the actual ice sheets of the Laka Glacier. Depending on the month (especially March to June), the area is a massive expanse of snow. Spend a couple of hours exploring the glacier fields, enjoying your packed lunch, and standing at the gateway to the high Indrahar Pass.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~13 km
Time Required: 4-5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate; long, knee-jarring descent
The Trail & Experience: Enjoy a final morning breakfast and start trek down to Triund. At Triund top have your lunch and you will begin the steady descent back toward the valley. Because gravity is on your side, the walk down the "22 curves" and past Galu Devi is fast and breezy, offering completely new morning perspectives of the valley below.
Reach Dharamkot by 3-4 pm.
Pro-Tips for Starting from Dharamkot
Water Management: Because the ridge has no natural spring water sources, water is carried up by mules, making plastic bottles expensive at the top. Carry a high-capacity reusable bladder or bottles filled from your base camp.
Weather Essentials: Even in the peak of summer, the wind howling across the Triund ridge once the sun goes down can be biting cold. Ensure you pack a solid windproof jacket and a warm fleece layer in your backpack.
Eco-Conservation: The local authorities are very strict about plastic waste on the Triund trail. Ensure your group follows a strict "Pack It In, Pack It Out" policy.
