A mesmerizing high-altitude trail that transforms from a frozen winter paradise in early summer to an endless sea of green alpine grass by autumn.
02 Nights – 03 Days · Step onto the high alpine grasslands where earth meets the sky.
Drive: 22 km (~1 hour) along the scenic Rohtang Pass highway to Gulaba
Trek Distance: ~6 km.
Time Required: 4 - 5 hours
Altitude Gain: 3,810 m
Difficulty: Moderate; steady uphill climb
The Trail & Experience: Your morning begins with a pickup from your stay in Manali for a spectacular drive up the hairpin bends of the Rohtang highway. You will get out at Gulaba, the designated road-head and starting point. After a quick briefing and load distribution with your guide team, the hike begins.
The trail almost immediately climbs through a dense canopy of oak, cedar, and dark blue pine forests. Within an hour, you break past the tree line into the open, sweeping alpine pastures of Jonker Thach. From here, the route winds steadily across vast, velvet-green meadows that offer panoramic views of Solang Valley and Hanuman Tibba. By mid-afternoon, you will arrive at Rola Kholi, a stunning high-altitude campsite nestled in a valley bowl next to a mountain stream.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~7 - 8 km round trip
Time Required: 6 - 7 hours
Altitude Gain: 4,260 m
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous; steep mountain ridge and boulder terrain
The Trail & Experience: An early 6:00 AM start is crucial today. Mountain weather around the lake shifts quickly by noon, and the morning offers the absolute best reflection on the water. The climb from camp begins steeply over a grassy ridge before giving way to a rocky mountain trail dominated by scree, moraine, and large boulders. Depending on the season (May to June), this entire stretch can be a vast field of crisp white snow.
After negotiating the final steep ridge slope, the terrain opens up to reveal the oval-shaped, sacred Bhrigu Lake. Local folklore says the great sage Bhrigu meditated here, and the lake never completely freezes over. The lake sits in a high bowl, surrounded by close-up views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges, including Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, and Indrasan. After taking in the raw, majestic views, you will retrace your steps back down to Rola Kholi (or continue along the ridge to Pandu Ropa for a different campsite viewpoint).
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~6 km descent
Time Required: 3 hours (If returning via Gulaba)
Drive: 22 km (~1 hour) back to Manali
Difficulty: Easy continuous descent
The Trail: Wake up to a relaxed morning breakfast in the meadow. After breaking camp and packing your gear, you will begin the descent. The trail follows the same sweeping ridge line back down toward Gulaba. Gravity is on your side, making the walk quick and pleasant with plenty of opportunities for final photos of the valley.
Your vehicle will be waiting at the Gulaba checkpoint to drive you back down to Manali. You will typically arrive back in town by 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, giving you ample time to catch a late evening Volvo bus out of the valley or head straight to a local cafe for a well-earned meal.
⚠️ Important Note: Unlike most Himalayan treks that take 4 to 5 days to reach 14,000 feet, Bhrigu Lake takes you from Manali (~6,700 ft) to an altitude of 14,100 ft in just TWO days of walking. Because of this extremely rapid climb, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is much higher than other easy-to-moderate treks. Excellent cardio fitness and proper hydration are non-negotiable.
