Kareri Lake is a high-altitude, shallow freshwater glacial lake situated at 2,934 meters (9,626 feet) in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, tucked under the Dhauladhar Range.
01 Night – 02 Days · Passes through quiet subtropical forests filled with native birdlife, wild rhododendrons and alpine meadows.
Trek Distance: ~10 km.
Time Required: 4 - 6 hours
Altitude: 2,930 m
Difficulty: Moderate (Steady uphill climb over stone steps)
The Trail & Experience: Morning (09:00 AM): Hit the trail directly from Kareri Village. The trek starts with a clear, well-marked path cutting through local farmlands before plunging into a beautiful forest of oak, pine, and rhododendron.
Mid-Day: You will closely follow the rushing waters of the Nyakund stream. The route features multiple crossings over wooden and iron suspension bridges. Take a breather at Reoti, the halfway marker, which has flat clearings and a couple of local tea stalls serving Maggi, snacks, and hot tea.
Afternoon (02:00 PM - 03:00 PM): Past Reoti, the forest line begins to recede, and the trail gets rockier with steep stone steps. As you cross the final ridge, the valley dramatically opens up to reveal the magnificent, oval-shaped Kareri Lake.
Evening: Set up your tents on the vast alpine meadows surrounding the lake. Perched on a hill overlooking the water is a beautiful, ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Climb up to the temple to witness a panoramic sunset reflecting off the glassy lake water.

You will arrive right back at the road-head in Kareri Village by early afternoon, where you can easily find local transit or your vehicle back to Dharamshala/Mcleodganj.

Pro-Tips for Starting from Dharamkot
Footwear: The trail consists largely of rough, uneven stone steps that can get incredibly slippery if there's moisture or rain. A sturdy pair of trekking shoes with deep lug patterns is highly recommended.
Weather & Temperature: Even if it feels warm down in Kareri Village, the lake sits directly below the mountain passes. The wind blowing off the high peaks drops the temperature sharply after sunset. Bring a thermal base layer and a heavy fleece or down jacket.
No Network: Mobile connectivity drops off completely within an hour of leaving Kareri Village. Inform your family/friends beforehand that you will be offline until tomorrow afternoon.
