From lush green valleys to glacial solitude, Beas Kund is a gentle reminder of how vast and timeless the Himalayas are.
02 Nights – 03 Days · Small steps, big peaks, unforgettable views.
Drive: 21 km (~1 to 1.5 hours) from Manali to Dhundi
Trek Distance: ~4.5 km
Time Required: 3 - 4 hours
Altitude Gain: 3,270 m
Difficulty: Easy to moderate gradual climb
The Trail: Your mountain vehicle will pick you up early from your stay in Manali. You will drive past the popular Solang Valley, ascending via a series of hairpin bends until you reach Dhundi, the road-head located near the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel. This is where your trek officially begins.
The trail immediately welcomes you with views of the roaring Beas River. You will hike over clear paths flanked by silver birch (bhojpatra), oak, and pine trees. As the forest line begins to thin out, the valley widens significantly, leading you into the massive alpine meadow of Bakarthach. This will be your base camp for both nights.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~6-7 km
Time Required: 5 - 6 hours
Altitude Gain: 3,700 m
Difficulty: Moderate; features steep moraine walking and boulder hopping
The Trail: Wake up to an early breakfast; a timely start is key to beating the afternoon clouds that frequently roll over the lake. You will leave your heavy packs at the base camp and carry just a light daypack with water, snacks, and rain gear. The trail climbs steeply over a ridge line and then crosses a challenging section of loose moraine debris and large glacial boulders.
After navigating the boulder fields, the trail levels out onto a small, flat plateau to reveal Beas Kund—a stunning, emerald-blue glacial lake nestled in a bowl. The peaks of Shitidhar, Friendship, and Hanuman Tibba stand directly overhead, casting massive reflections across the water. Spend an hour soaking in the incredible, raw energy of the river's birthplace before safely retracing your steps back down to Bakarthach.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~4.5 km
Time Required: 2 - 3 hours
Drive: 21 km (~1 hour) from Dhundi to Manali
Difficulty: Easy, continuous descent
The Trail: After a relaxed morning breakfast at the campsite, it’s time to break camp and pack up. The trek back down to Dhundi follows the same scenic route along the riverbank. Because it is purely a descent, the walk is fast and pleasant, giving you ample time to take any final landscape photos.
Your private vehicle or taxi will be waiting for you at the Dhundi bridge to drive you back. You will typically arrive back in Manali by 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to catch an evening Volvo bus back to Delhi/Chandigarh or check into a local hotel for a long, hot shower.
⚠️ Acclimatization: Because it is a short trek, your body has minimal time to adjust to altitude drops in oxygen. Prior cardiovascular prep (jogging/running) is recommended.
