The ultimate crown jewel of Himalayan weekend treks, where a single day's hike from Mcleodganj places you right at the base of the massive, snow-capped Dhauladhar wall.
01 Night – 02 Days · Offers panoramic views of the colossal, snow-capped Dhauladhar Mountain Range on one side and the vast Kangra Valley on the other.
Drive: 22 km (~1 hour)
Trek Distance: ~9 km.
Time Required: 4 - 5 hours
Altitude Gain: 2,875 m
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (Steady incline with a steep final stretch)
The Trail & Experience: Morning (09:00 AM): Set out directly from your Dharamkot stay. The trail begins with a gradual, lovely walk through beautiful forests of oak, deodar, and rhododendron. You will hike past the Galu Devi Temple, which acts as the official checkpoint for the trek.
Past Galu Devi, the trail opens up to reveal sweeping views of the Kangra Valley on one side. The path is well-defined and rocky. You'll pass a few iconic local tea stalls along the way—like the Magic View Cafe—perfect spots to take a short breather, grab a bottle of water, and enjoy a quick snack.
The last 1 to 1.5 km of the trek features a series of sharp, steep switchbacks (often called the "22 curves"). Dig into your steady rhythm here. As you clear the final curve, the terrain flattens out dramatically onto the sprawling, grassy ridge of Triund.
Check into your campsite. The stark contrast here is incredible—the massive, snow-clad wall of the Dhauladhar Range feels close enough to touch on your left, while the vast Kangra Valley stretches out endlessly to your right. Watch a spectacular sunset paint the granite mountains in deep shades of gold and pink.
Highlights & Camp Life:
Trek Distance: ~9 km round trip
Time Required: 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy continuous descent
The Trail & Experience: Morning (06:00 AM): Wake up early to catch the sunrise hitting the Dhauladhar peaks. The morning mountain air up here is incredibly crisp and refreshing. Enjoy breakfast with a view of the mountains.
Pack up your daypacks, break camp, and begin the steady walk back down. Gravity makes the return journey much faster, but be careful with your footing on the loose gravel along the "22 curves" section. Trekking poles are highly useful here to cushion your knees.
Around 02:00 PM, you will arrive back at Galu Devi Temple and cruise right back down into your base camp at Dharamkot. You'll be back in time for a celebratory lunch at one of Dharamkot's popular cafes.
Pro-Tips for Starting from Dharamkot
Water Management: Because the ridge has no natural spring water sources, water is carried up by mules, making plastic bottles expensive at the top. Carry a high-capacity reusable bladder or bottles filled from your base camp.
Weather Essentials: Even in the peak of summer, the wind howling across the Triund ridge once the sun goes down can be biting cold. Ensure you pack a solid windproof jacket and a warm fleece layer in your backpack.
Eco-Conservation: The local authorities are very strict about plastic waste on the Triund trail. Ensure your group follows a strict "Pack It In, Pack It Out" policy.
